This is the second installment of a series of articles about beneficial skin care regimes presented by Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr. Hootan Zandifar, of the Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery division of the Osborne Head & Neck Institute.
The Division of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Osborne Head and Neck Institute had its Fall Cosmetic educational seminar this past week. During the seminar Dr. Hootan Zandifar gave an informative talk on non-surgical enhancements. Several areas were covered including daily skin care, BOTOX®, Fillers such as Jeuvéderme® and Restylane®, Laser treatments, as well as, topical treatments.
The topics of daily skin care and topical treatments garnered a lot of interest with the participants. This was mostly because of the overwhelming amount of information that is presented in the media and press. Dr. Zandifar tried to clarify this by going over a few simple steps that can help almost anyone.
Step 1: Take daily care of your skin
Everyone should follow a basic routine daily. This routine starts with cleansing your face followed by a toner and a moisturizer. This process should be repeated again at night. It is especially important to remove all make-up and debris from your skin before going to bed as these materials can plug the pores and dehydrate the skin.
Step 2: Protect your skin from damage
As stated in the previous blog posting, sunscreens are what many consider to be the ultimate “fountain of youth”. Daily use of a sunscreen is essential to a good skin care regimen. The physical blockers that use Zinc Oxide or Titanium Oxide are generally the best sunscreens available. It is important to apply sunscreens daily even on cloudy days as the damaging sun radiations can penetrate the cloud layers.
Step 3: Use the right products for your skin
Finally, it is important that your daily routine is individualized for your specific skin. For example, if you have an oily skin and problems with acne, you don’t want to use the products that plug your pores. Essentially, because everyone’s skin is different and reacts differently to certain products, there is no one specific cleanser, toner, moisturizer or sunscreen that is universally recommended. The right product will depend on your skin type. Therefore, it is important to seek the advice of a professional for your individualized skin care
A message from Dr. Hootan Zandifar M.D., Director of the Skin Center at the Osborne Head and Neck Institute:
“I’ve seen many patients that have been confused with the amount of information that is presented to them. I think that the simplest approaches work the best because they are easy to follow. At the Osborne Head and Neck Institute we like to develop individualized skin care regimens for our patients because we understand that not every skin is the same. If you follow a simple and daily routine of taking care of your skin you can significantly slow down the effects of aging on your skin.”
