During the Fall Cosmetic social one of the most common questions that was asked of Dr. Hootan Zandifar, Director of skin center at the Osborne Head and Neck Institute, was regarding the age at which it is appropriate to have a cosmetic procedure done. This is, of course, variable as everyone ages at a different pace. But what about BOTOX® treatments which along with cosmetic fillers such as Juvéderme®, Restylane®, Radiesse® and Sculptra®, have become some of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in the world?
BOTOX® (onabotulinumtoxinA) is substance that acts by paralyzing muscles. The use of BOTOX® in cosmetics, centers on the idea that daily and repeated use of certain muscles (i.e. muscles of the forehead and muscles around the eyes) causes wrinkles to develop. By paralyzing these muscles, BOTOX® allows these wrinkles to soften. It is important to note that once wrinkles have developed, it is difficult to make them disappear entirely. It would then make sense that in order to have the best results, BOTOX® treatment should be instituted right before wrinkles have developed or just as soon as one begins to notice them. This allows for the best and most natural results. Dr. Zandifar usually recommends initiation of a BOTOX® treatment in early 30s as this is typically the time when these wrinkles begin to show. However, some can benefit from BOTOX® as early as mid to late 20s. There is no maximum age limit for BOTOX® and most patients, as they age, can soften their expressions and appearances with repeated BOTOX® treatments.
A message from Dr. Hootan Zandifar, Director of the Skin Center at the Osborne Head and Neck Institute:
“While most will look at cosmetic procedures as procedures done to turn back aging, I have always advised my patients that select procedures can be used to prevent or slow down aging. BOTOX® treatment is one of these procedures. It has been used safely and effectively in the market for many years and continues to be popular amongst my patients because of no downtime and ability to look natural and un-operated. If you are looking to soften you expressions, improve you appearance, look younger without any major surgery or downtime, BOTOX® is amongst a series of treatments that you can benefit from.”
